Jason Godeke: Temporary: New Murals, Paintings, and Sketches 5.3 – 6.30 2013

First Sight of the Sea compressedOpening Reception: First Friday, May 3, 5-9 PM

Temporary: New Murals, Paintings & Diorama Sketches by Jason Godeke
May 3 – June 30, 2013

Godeke’s work is simultaneously playful and foreboding, reminiscent of the imaginative realm of childhood yet removed. In his most recent work he has been using mass produced toy figurines, modifying them with crude sculptural techniques and arranging them into tableaux with fruit, flowers, boxes and other typical still-life objects. These become the subject of his paintings. Scale plays a significant role in these works as it undermines the illusionistic space of painting while heightening the theatricality of the image. This is especially obvious in the two large murals Godeke made for this exhibition. One in the Project Room along with smaller paintings and sketches; and a huge 12′ x 14′ canvas affixed to the exterior wall of LCCM.

Jason Godeke grew up in Caspar and graduated from Mendocino High School in 1986. He has returned to the area while on sabbatical from his professorship at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.
