Home for the Holidays 12.3.10 – 1.30.11

Home for the Holidays Show CardDecember 3rd thru January 30th, 2011
Opening Reception Friday, December 3rd
6-10pm @ LCCM

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, Lost Coast Culture Machine’s fifth exhibition, celebrates the season of friends, family, warm hearths and giving by focusing on the overlooked and forgotten.  Short of tsunamis, earthquakes, and prison riots, we at LCCM feel that our communities of poor, homeless and imprisoned are far too easy to ignore amidst all the holiday shopping and cheer.

Imagine home.  Did you picture a solitary cell, a squat, a foreclosure?  Or a ditch or a bench or a bridge?  During a cold snap last year, LCCM was broken into and slept in, on the same morning that Fort Bragg Police found a frozen body in a tent on the beach.  Pass the ham, pour the eggnog, and put another log on the fire.

During Home for the Holidays, LCCM will be serving as a donation hub for every organization we could manage.  We will be collecting food for The Fort Bragg Food Bank, warm coats of all sizes to help with The Outdoor Store’s annual Warm Coat Drive, and sleeping bags and blankets for the Evergreen United Methodist Church.  LCCM and its artists will also be donating a portion of all sales to Habitat for Humanity of Mendocino Coast, Critical Resistance, and All of Us or None.  All civic humanity aside, this is actually an art show.

Home for the Holidays Show CardLaurel Garcia Colvin presents the new American toile, where the haves and have-nots picnic and while away the hours together.  Leigh Van Duzer imagines the housing crash frame-by-frame on the way down, Elizabeth Duffy creates the epitome of safe and secure living, and Jeremiah Jenkins renders scale models of the ideal in dispossessed housing.  The Counter Narrative Society will come bearing the imprisoned on their backs and Detroit’s Object Orange will turn forgotten eyesores into eyesores begging for swift destruction.

Join us Friday, December 3rd for the Home for the Holidays opening reception from 6 to 10pm and bring a donation of food, warmth, and cash for the Mendocino coast community.  Happy Holidays.
